George Ower   (        -         )

Catharine Morisone   (        -         )

They were married in Dundee 1 June 1708 and had at least four children:

Margaret Owr was baptised in Dundee, Forfarshire, 7 April 1709.

John Ower was baptised in Liff Benvie and Invergowrie in May 1713.

George Ower was baptised in Dundee 15 April 1716.  See next.

Elizabeth Ower was baptised in Dundee 18 February 1718.



George Ower   (1716 -         )

George was baptised in Dundee 15 April 1716.

Elizabeth Couper   (1721 -         )

Elizabeth was baptised in Dundee 4 September 1721.

They were married in Dundee 30 November 1749 and were both still alive and living in Perth in 1799.

They had at least two children, both born in Perth:

John Ower. was born 8 July 1756.  See next.

William Ower A weaver, he married Grizel Scott 6 December 1776 in Perth.  Their children were John (1778), David (1780), Alexander (1782), James (1784), all born in Perth.



John Ower   (1756 - 18??)

John was born in Perth 8 July 1756.  He was a weaver.

Cecil Wright   (1756 - 1833)

Cecil was born in Perth 8 July 1756.

They were married April 29, 1777 in Perth.  Cecil died in Perth in 1833.

Their children were all born in Perth:

Robert Ower *** was baptised 22 December 1777.  A weaver, he married Ann (or Agnes) Pettigrew 15 May 1796 in Barony, Lanark. They were living at 39 Annfield Road, Dundee in 1841.   Their children, all born Perth, were John *** (1797), Cecilia (1799), Ann (1800), Betty (1802), James (1804), John Kiell (1806), Jean (1808), Isobell (1811), Margaret Coupar (1813), Robert (1816) and Alexander (1818).   Robert died in Perth 8 May 1844.

Margaret Ower *** was baptised 24 January 1780.  She married John Keill in Perth in 1805.  Their children, all born in Dundee, were Christina (1807)***, Ann (1809), John Ower *** (1810), Christian (1811), Cecelia (1816), William (1817) ***, Janet (1818) and Hannah (1820).

John Ower *** was baptised 2 November 1781.  A weaver, he married Margaret Hay in Dundee in 1803.   Their children were James Hay (1804), Robert (1805), Elizabeth (1806), William (1809), John (1811), Bertha (1813) and Hay *** (1814).  John died in New York, USA, 26 May 1831.

Jean Ower was baptised 10 July 1783.

Janet Ower was baptised 7 September 1785.

May Ower was baptised 1 March 1787.

Cicil Ower *** was baptised 26 July 1789.  She married Archibald Dewar in Perth in 1807.  Their children were Janet (1809), Peter (1811), Alexander *** (1819), Glenorchy (1822), David (1824), James (1826) and Margaret (1828).

William Ower *** was baptised 1 February 1791.  See next.

David Ower *** was baptised 27 August 1798.  He married Jannet Burns in Dundee in 1829.  Their children were Bertha *** (1831), Elizabeth (1834), Agnes (1836) and Margaret (1838).  David died 6 July 1881 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey.



William Ower ***   (1791 - 1865)

William was born in Perth 1 February 1791.  He was a Weaver.

Christine Simpson   (17?? - 1855)

Christine was born in Scotland, possibly at Tulliallan, Perthshire, 15 May 1791 to David Simpson and Ann Paterson.

In 1841 the family were living in Dundee at Annfield Road.  William had emigrated to Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA, in 1840 and his family joine him in 1842.   William died in November 1865 in Paterson.  Christine died there 9 November 1855.

Their children were all born in Perth:

William Ower *** was baptised 1812.  See next.

Mary Ower was baptised 1815.

James/John Ower was born about 1818.  He married Eliza Duyer at Paterson 24 December 1848. James/John died soon after this.

Peter Ower was born in 1823.  He married Ann Bell 6 October 1848 in Manchester Twp., Passaic County, where he and his brother, William, ran successful manufacturing and grocery businesses.   He was also widely known for his good deeds, including saving his local Baptist Church from bankruptcy.   His marriage produced no children, and he died 2 January 1892 in Genoa, Italy, where he had gone in the hope that a change of air would improve his health.   Peter's gravestone in Cedar Lawn, Paterson, NJ, is a 10 foot high obelisk with an engraving of his face.  He left a large estate which included a sum of money to his brother's illegitimate son, William (below), not knowing that William had preceded him.

Cicilia Ower was baptised 12 April 1825.  She married James Wyness and died 6 March 1904 in Passaic City.

Hay Ower was born in May 1832.  A tinsmith and plumber, he married firstly Anna Hamilton and had 3 children, Johanna, Christina (c.1861) and James Wyness (1862).   Secondly he married Catherine Reid in Paterson in 1867.  They had one child, Cecilia (1875).  Hay died 29 Sept.1920.



William Ower ***   (1812 - 1883)

William was born 27 March 1812 in Perth.  A weaver, he was living at Annfield Road, Dundee, in 1841.  He had one illegitimate child by Ann Eggo.  The family emigrated in 1842 to Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA, and William and his brother, Peter, ran successful manufacturing and grocery businesses there.   He married firstly Johanna Crawford, daughter of William and Johanna Crawford, who died without issue 17 October 1857.  Secondly he married Margaret Crawford, daughter of Matthew and Anna Crawford.  This marriage produced two children, Mary (c.1859) *** and Peter (1861).   William died 21 October 1883 in Paterson, leaving several properties to his wife and son, Peter, but nothing to his illegitimate son, William, in Scotland.   Margaret died in Paterson 2 January 1889.
N.B. There was also a William Ower, grocer & spirit dealer, in Mid Street, Lochee 1865/67, but our William was in USA by this time.

Ann Eggo ***   (1802 - 1877)

Ann was baptised 12 August 1802 in Fettercairn, Kincardineshire.  She was a dressmaker.  She was 35 and single whe she gave birth to William.   In 1851 she and William were living at Donalds Road, Mitcheles Land, Lochee.   She never married but lived with William and his family at Johnstone Land, Lochee, and at 9 Heron's Lane, Lochee. In 1871 she was with her brother, John, in Monifieth, but she died at William's in Lochee 17 February 1877 aged 74.

William Ower ***   (1837 - 1890)

William was baptised in Lochee 26 January 1837.  He was a yarn warper and carpet warper.  At that time Lochee was in the parish of Liff and Benvie, Forfarshire, but is now part of Dundee.

Margaret Munro ***   (c.1840 - 1887 )

Margaret was born in Lochee about 1840.  She was a winder.

They were married 29 January 1858 in Lochee.  They were living at Donald's Land in 1858, Johnstone Land, 80 South Road in 1861, 9 Herons Lane in 1877 and 1881 and at 8 Herons Lane in 1889, all Lochee.  Margaret died 4 May 1887, aged 46.  William died at Balgray, Tealing, Angus, 11 June 1890, aged 54, just two years too soon to benefit from his Uncle Peter's will.

Their children were all born in Dundee:

Ann Ower *** was baptised 16 May 1858.  She married James McFarlane ***.

William Ower *** was baptised 1860.  A jute mill worker, and later overseer, died 1947. he married Elizabeth Culross in 1887.  Their children were Jessie (c.1892) ***, Daisy (c.1895), Christina Culross (1897), Susanna (c.1899), William and Margaret.

James Ower was baptised 4 May 1862.  A jute mill worker, he married Margaret Borland.  Their children were William (c.1885), Eliza (c.1887), Margaret (c.1889), Alexander (1891), Christina (c.1895), George (c.1898) and John (c.1900).

George Hay Ower was baptised 7 June 1864.  A jute mill worker, he married Catherine McEwan in Lochee in 1887.  Their children were Elizabeth (c.1889), William (1891), George (1892, died aged 9 months) and Catherine (c.1894).

Alexander Ower was baptised 10 June 1866. Jute mill worker

Peter Ower was baptised 26 Nov 1868.

Helen Ower was baptised 24 Sept 1871.

Margaret Ower was born in 1876, had an illegitimate daughter, Maggie, b. 1897 in Lochee, died aged 4 months.

Jessie Ower was born in May 1877 and died aged 2 weeks.

Robert Ower was born in January 1880 and died aged 6 weeks.
