Joseph McFarlane   (        - 1843)

Joseph may have been baptised 15 Oct 1785 at Ballinrich, Little Dunkeld, Perthshire, the son of Donald Mcfarlane and Jannet Cummin (though none of his chldren were named after his siblings, which seems to be the tradition in this family).

He was living in Moneydie, Perthshire, in 1804, and his occupation was given as 'wright' and as 'master cooper'.   There was a Jean McFarlane baptised in Moneydie 19 February 1802, with parents Joseph McFarlane and Margaret McFarlane, and there is no trace of another Joseph McFarlane in the area at that time.   Did our Joseph father a child out of wedlock?  And was the mother related to his future wife?

Grizal McFarlane   (        - 1833)

Grizal was living in Redgorton, Perthshire, at the time of her marriage.   She is also referred to as Grace (at burial and after her death).  'Grizal' is probably the Gaelic 'Griseal' (pronounced 'gree'shul'), and is associated with the English name 'Grace'.

They were married 16 May 1804 at Moneydie, Perthshire.  They were living at Clockie Mile, Findo Gask, Perthshire in 1811 and 1813 and at Chapelbank, Findo Gask, in 1815 and 1818.   Presumably they were Gaelic speakers as their first two children were baptised by Mr. Duncan McFarlane, the Gaelic minister at Perth.  This is recorded in the register of baptisms at Findo Gask in 1811, but it was not found in the Perth register.

They were living in the parish of Blackford in 1821 and in Auchterarder from at least 1823 onwards.  Grizal (Grace) died there 23 May 1833 and Joseph on 22 March 1843.  The address in 1841 was the Feus, Auchterarder.

They had nine children:

John McFarlane was baptised in Moneydie 23 July 1805.

Peter McFarlane was born in Findo Gask 7 October 1807.

Grizal MacFarlane *** was born in Findo Gask 21 May 1809.  She was also known as Grace.  In 1833 she married Duncan Stalker who is recorded as being a teacher, a gardener and a clerk.  They had four children, Peter (1836), John *** (1838), Margaret (c1840) and Catherine *** (c1842).  Duncan was transported to New Norfolk, Tasmania, in 1844, for falsifying a deed in his employment.   Grace died in Auchterarder in 1846, all four children still under the age of ten.  John, emigrated to Hobart, Tasmania, in 1857, aged 19.

Ann McFarlane was born in Findo Gask 14 May 1811.

John McFarlane was born in Findo Gask 26 September 1813.  He died aged 18, 24 May 1832.

James McFarlane *** was born in Findo Gask 19 December 1815.  See next.

George McFarlane was born in Findo Gask 12 March 1818.  He died 5 February 1835 aged 17.

After Margaret's death, and some time between 1852 and 1857, James moved to Dundee where he became a labourer.  At the age of 41 he remarried.   His bride was 25-year-old jute-worker, Mary Ann Reid, who was born in Ireland about 1833, the daughter of Robert Reid, labourer, and Hannah Glover.  She had a sister, Agnes, and a brother, John.

They were married 2 October 1857 at 3 Windsor Street, Dundee.  James was now a rag warehouseman or "broker" at 144 Overgate, Dundee (1860, 1861), a waste-dealer at 51 Seagate (1866), at 39 Seagate (1869, 1870) and at 70 Blackness Road (1871, 1872).   He is also recorded as being a wincy weaver.  He died a pauper at the Parochial Hospital, Dundee, 8 August 1897 aged 81.
