It is possible Anne /Agnes died 15 February 1807 and William married Mary Duncan (Murroes, Angus 1808), having three more children, Agnes (1810), Mary and Jane (1813).   But it is also possible Mary died in 1820 and William married Isabel Fitchet (Monikie, 1825).

Ann was 16 and James was 21 when they were married in Dundee 31 December 1851.  In 1855 they were in lodgings at 94 Carolina Port and they also lived at 95 Ferry Road (1861) and at Springhill, where James died 3 August 1864 just before his 34th birthday.  Ann died of dropsy at 11 William Street, King Street, 17 February 1875, aged only 39.

Their children were all baptised in Dundee:

James Stewart *** was born 15 July 1855.  See next.

Mary Stewart was born about 1857.

Elizabeth Stewart was born 1860.

William Stewart was born 1863.

There was another child before James who died in infancy.

James Stewart ***   (1855 - 1927)

James was born 15 July 1855 at 94 Carolina Port, Dundee.  He also lived at 95 Ferry Road (1861), Springhill (1864) and 11 William Street, King Street (1875).  His father died when he was 9 and his mother when he was 19.   He went to Glasgow, presumably after his mother's death (he seems to have been known to his wife's family about 1879/80) where he worked as a shipbuilder's labourer.

Helen Rodgers   (c.1858 - 1939)

Helen was born in Glasgow 1857/8.
Known as Ellen, she was a Roman Catholic, lived in Glasgow and was a mill worker.  Her address was 2 Dyers Lane in 1861, 131 Saltmarket in 1871, 109 Saltmarket in 1862 and 25 Trongate in 1881.

They were married 17 April 1882 at St. Andrews RC chapel, Great Clyde Street, Glasgow and lived at first at 25 Trongate, Glasgow.  Ellen worked in a jute factory.   But by 1884 they were in Dundee, living at 62 Princes Street. They were at 16 Crescent Lane in 1888, 17 Watson Street in 1891, 51 Kemback Street in 1895, 48 Kemback Street in 1901 and 5 Glebe Street from about 1908.   James worked as a foundry labourer (1884, 1890), a ship labourer (1891) and a gasworks labourer from about 1894.  Ellen was now a mill preparer.

James died 15 August 1927 aged 72.  Ellen went to Canada with her son, Edward, about 1930, and lived there for about two years with her daughter, Isobel.   She did not like Canada, however, and returned to Dundee.  She died 18 March 1939 at 3 Glebe Street aged 79.

Other than Mary, their children were all born in Dundee:

Mary Stewart *** was born 1 May 1882 in Glasgow.  She married William Muckersie Thomson 5 June 1903. Their children were John (1905), Isobel, William Muckersie *** (1910), Margaret, Lily and Alexander Rae.

James Stewart *** was born 15 March 1884.  See next.

William Stewart was born about 1886.  He did not marry.

Margaret Stewart was born 15 May 1888.
Known as Maggy or Dolly, she was a professional singer and dancer.  She married Eugene Strong, a musician. They had no children.

Bridget Rodgers Stewart *** was born 29 December 1890.  She married Alexander Dicks Stuart (Sandy) in 1911 in Kinglassie, Fife.  The pair emigrated to New York, USA, in 1913, Bridget now calling herself Annie.   Changing her name again, this time to Nancy, she married Henry Zehetner 18 November 1922 and had a daughter, Veronica (also known as Elizabeth), the following year.   'Nancy' was in fact nine years older than Henry, though she lied about her age.   By 1930 she was no longer living with Henry, and 10 August 1932 she married Carmine Lombardo, now calling herself Bella.  Nancy Lombardo [Nancy Stewart] died in Queens, New York, 29 June 1937.

Isobel Stewart *** was born c.1892.  She married John Henry Fyall (RAF 1917) and emigrated to Canada in 1927.  They had six children, Masie, Doris, Mary (1911) ***, James Stewart (1914), Helen *** (1816), John and Doris (1920).  John senior died in 1935, Isobel in 1952, both in Toronto.

Edward Stewart was born 3 March 1895.  An upholsterer, he spent some time in Canada from about 1930 but later returned to Dundee and married Ann Duffy.  They had no children.

John Stewart was born in 1897.  He married Margaret Gerrard and had three children, Marjory, Gerrard and Raymond.

Daniel Stewart was born in 1901.  He married Margaret Hird.  They had no children.

James Stewart ***   (1884 - 1954)

James was born 15 March 1884 at 62 Princes Street, Dundee.  He also lived at 17 Watson Street, 52 Kemback Street and 5 Glebe Street.  He attended St. Patrick's RC School and became a foundry labourer.   He joined the army (Black Watch) in 1902 and served in the First World War in France.

Annie McFarlane ***   (1886 - 1954)

Annie was born 19 April 1886 at 13 Lawrence Street, Dundee.  She also lived at 12 Balgay Street, 12 City Road and 17 Craigie Street.   She attended Mitchell Street School, and as a young girl she assisted in her father's shop.  Later she trained as a spool-winder in a jute mill.   Her mother died when she was only 13 and her father was an alcoholic.  She blamed this lack of parental guidance for marrying an unsuitable husband.

They were married 27 July 1908 at St. Patrick's RC church, Dundee.  They were living at 58 Kemback Street in 1911, 18 Craigie Street in 1915 and 1927 and at 10 Craigie Street in 1940.   The children were all baptised as Catholics but were brought up as Protestants as their father was not a regular church-goer.

James worked as a golf-club maker and lost the sight of one eye when hit in the face with a golf club.   He became a chimney-sweep's assistant, and later a sawyer with Melville Dunn & Co.  He also worked as a doorman in the Royal cinema in Arthurstone Terrace.   He spent all his money on drink and was frequently drunk, but was a hard worker and always turned up for work on time despite having a hangover.

Annie was very prim and proper in contrast to her husband's way of life.  She died at Maryfield Hospital 30 March 1954, aged 67.   James then went to live with his daughter, Millie, at 14 Grange Road, Monifieth, where he died of lung cancer four months later on 5 August, aged 70.

Their children were all baptised in Dundee:

James Stewart was born in 1908.
A mill mechanic, he married Rose Murray and lived in Dundee.

John Stewart was born in 1910.  A sawyer, he married Jennifer Tully and lived in Dundee.

Margaret McFarlane Stewart *** was born 11th July 1915.
She married Marian Edmund Starosta ***.

Millicent Stewart was born in 1920.
She married Alexander Lawrence.  They lived in Tasmania, Australia, for two years but returned and settled in Monifieth.

Douglas Stewart was born in 1925.
A mill mechanic, he went to India to work in a jute mill, but was forced to leave when he married an Indian woman, Kadhu Marbaniang (known as Lily). They ran a paper shop in Dundee for a time, the went to Pakistan where Douglas worked in a mill.  On their return to Dundee they ran a confectioner's shop.

According to the censuses Helen was born in Glasgow 1857/8, but there is no record of her birth there.   However, there was an Agnes Rodgers born in Glasgow 29 January 1858 to a Bridget Rodgers, marked 'illegitimate'.   There was no Agnes Rodgers in Glasgow on the 1861 census, and no Bridget Rodgers who was single and of an appropriate age. It seems likely that Agnes is in fact Helen, though why the father's name is not mentioned, why the child was illegitimate, and why the name was changed to Helen are unclear.
