Patrick Rodgers   (18?? - 1885)

Patrick was born in Armagh, Ireland, about 1825, the son of John? Rodgers and Mary Duff?.

Bridget Ruddy   (18?? - 1898)

Bridget was also born in Armagh about 1826, the daughter of John? Roddie and Mary Duffy?.

They were married in County Armagh in 1853 (1843?) but moved to Glasgow about 1852.  They were living at 2 Dyers Lane in 1861, 109 Saltmarket in 1862, 131 Saltmarket in 1871 and at Trongate in 1881 and 1885.   Patrick was a quay labourer and general labourer.  He died 22 November 1885.  Bridget died 2 March 1898 at 114 Trongate.

The first 4 children were born in Ireland.  The others were all born in Glasgow, though no record of Helen's birth has been found.

Margaret Rodgers was born in Armagh about 1845.  She was a hairdresser.

John Rodgers was baptised in Newry, County Down, 20 May 1846.

Patrick Rodgers was baptised in Newry, 5 December 1848.  A shoemaker, he married Helen Murphy in Glasgow 26 September 1873.  They had a daughter, Bridget (c.1876).

Daniel Rodgers was baptised in Newry 24 February 1853.  A shoemaker, he was living at Paisley Middle Church in 1881.

Mary Rodgers was born about 1854.  She married John Paterson, a shoemaker, 2 June 1879, and had at least four children, John (c.1876), James (c.1879), Patrick (1880) and Mary (c.1887).   In 1991 they were living with Mary's mother at 114 Trongate, Glasgow.  Mary was a 'dish hawker'.

Helen Rodgers was born 1857/8.  She married James Stewart.

Bridget Rodgers was born 16 February 1860.

Edward Rodgers was born 6 September 1862.  He was a shoemaker.

James Rodgers was born 22 February 1865.

According to the censuses Helen was born in Glasgow 1857/8, but there is no record of her birth there.   However, there was an Agnes Rodgers born in Glasgow 29 January 1858 to a Bridget Rodgers, marked 'illegitimate'.   There was no Agnes Rodgers in Glasgow on the 1861 census, and no Bridget Rodgers who was single and of an appropriate age. It seems likely that Agnes is in fact Helen, though why the father's name is not mentioned, why the child was illegitimate, and why the name was changed to Helen are unclear.
